How far can a dollar go?

The students from “The Economics of Philanthropy” class (UGBA 196) and the Center for Nonprofit and Public Leadership invited ODALC to join an event where attendees learned about becoming effective philanthropists, heard from the President of Kiva, Premal Shah, watched live artistic performances (spoken word, hip hop, and Brazilian drumming), and enjoyed free food and drinks. Local nonprofits had tables at the event, providing attendees with the opportunity to get connected and learn about a wide array of local service opportunities and programs.


Green Certificate Programs (CSUEB)

Eight new “green professional development” certificate programs, the instruction for which will be offered online, were launched, March 29 by California State University, East Bay’s Division of Continuing and International Education.


Rising Sun Energy Center

Rising Sun Energy Center, founded in 1994, has evolved from a modest renewable energy education center into a leading green workforce development and retrofit services organization.


Mario Chiodo

Mario Chiodo, when pressed, can come up with several defining events that led him to where he is now—creating Remember Them: Champions for Humanity, a grand contemporary work of art that will put a definitive “there” in Oakland, bring tourists, inspire and educate children and place the city on the international cultural and human rights map.


What INSPIRES You? ODALC & WFM Oakland!

Oakland Digital Arts & Literacy Center (ODALC), a nonprofit organization teaching digital skills and Internet literacy to underemployed youth, unveiled the top twelve designs submitted to its Inspire Oakland Billboard Contest this Tuesday Whole Foods Market Oakland.

Earlier this year, ODALC asked participants to submit a billboard design conveying something inspirational about the City of Oakland. The top twelve submissions will be featured in three of Oakland’s most prominent art galleries; the top four submissions will be displayed on a digital billboard on Highway 80 (donated by CBS Outdoor). Finally, one lucky winner will have his or her work posted on a commercial billboard (donated by the City of Oakland).

In an unexpected twist, ODALC asked community members at Whole Foods Market to select their favorite billboard designs from the top twelve, ultimately letting the public choose the images that will be displayed in their collective environment. Over 320 people submitted ballots.

“Bike-In” Movie Night

Whole Foods Market Oakland is having a great event Friday, April 23rd at – a “Bike-In” Movie Night that will raise funds for the East Bay Bicycle Coalition!


Inspire Oakland Billboard Contest Results!

Ever since it was first announced in January, 2010, ODALC’s Inspire Oakland Billboard Contest has generated a significant amount of interest from the public. Artists and designers from all corners of the Bay Area naturally jumped at the opportunity to have their work published on a billboard that collects hundreds of thousands of views daily.


The Pulitzer Prizes in the Digital Age

The Pulitzer Prizes, named after publisher Joseph Pulitzer and administered by Columbia University in New York City, is considered one of the highest achievements in journalism, literature, drama and music. The 2010 Pulitzer Prize winners and nominated finalists in all categories will be announced on April 13, 2010, at 3 p.m. Eastern daylight time.


Energy Action Coalition

The Energy Action Coalition is a U.S. non-profit organization made up of 50 partner organizations in the U.S. and Canada that runs campaigns to build the youth and student clean energy movement and advocate for tangible changes on local, state, national and international levels in North America. Energy Action focuses its campaigns on campuses, communities, corporate practices, and politics. It is part of the Global Youth Climate Movement.
