Jimmy Wales

Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that can be edited by anyone and that aims to provide free encyclopedic information to its readers. It was formally launched on 15 January 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger using the concept and technology of a wiki pioneered by Ward Cunningham.


Culture, Power, Policy

For almost 20 years, Quinn Delaney and Wayne Jordan have supported a variety of youth organizing, youth development and civil rights organizations. Around 2000, they saw an exciting crop of youth organizations emerge that gave them new ideas about how to be most effective as philanthropists. Out of these ideas came the Akonadi Foundation.

The vibe: A new gallery three blocks north of the bustling 23rd Street corridor, the large Studio Quercus is in good company with a few other galleries on the same block, including one at an auto body repair shop.


Winter ’09

On September 19, Asian Health Services celebrated 35 years of service to the community. It was a magical night of delicious food and riveting entertainment. With over 600 guests in attendance, it was a memorable evening. Many thanks to the hard work of Dinner Committee members, especially Co-Chairs Eileen Tong & Rosaline Kiang, and the volunteers and staff who helped make the event a big success!

This unique half-day workshop at Stanford University aims to showcase effective use cases of online video for attitude and behavior change with a small group of innovators. Topics to be discussed range from web video design to production, distribution and evaluation.

Oakland Digital Arts & Literacy Center features Reid Hoffman (Co-founder, Executive Chairman of LinkedIn) stating the importance of individuals to treat themselves as a small business. Reid’s ability to connect people is parallel to the mission and objective of the newly formed non-profit, Oakland Digital Arts & Literacy Center.

Oakland Local is an independent, non-profit community news and information hub, connecting community and news. Our site combines original investigative and feature reporting with community news and information about Oakland non-profit organizations, community groups and engaged citizens.


Melody of China

The Shanghai-born Cai is known for her blend of modern dance and Chinese influences, but whatever dance idiom she chooses, Cai’s trademark is to give each work a unique texture. Cai – who founded her troupe in 1988 – credits the initial impetus of “SenseScape” to composer Gang Situ, her longtime collaborative partner, who has created a partly original, partly sampled score for the work.


Innovation

Alec Ross serves as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s Senior Advisor for Innovation. He is tasked with maximizing the potential of technology in service of America’s diplomatic and development goals. Previously, Alec served as convener for Obama for America’s Technology, Media & Telecommunications Policy Committee. In 2000, he and three colleagues co-founded One Economy and grew it to the world’s largest digital divide organization with programs on four continents. Alec started his career as a sixth grade teacher in inner-city Baltimore through Teach For America.


Flying Tigers

Oakland Digital Arts & Literacy Center friend Harry Lim (World War II veteran, served in an all-Chinese American unit supporting the 14th Air Force’s famed Flying Tigers) giving words of support and encouragement for the community to “visit” the ODALC.
