2013 INSPIRE Oakland & INSPIRE Berkeley!

[VIDEO] Inspire Oakland 2013 x Mayor Jean Quan

INSPIRE is Oakland Digital’s workforce development program that provides professional development for community college and state-level students pursuing a career in the competitive graphic design job market.

Each year, Oakland Digital asks graphic design students to create a billboard design that conveys the question, “What about your city inspires you?” Three talented students will see their design featured on commercial billboards throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, receive paid internship opportunities, and learn the career-related tools needed to find appropriate employment.

Oakland Digital's 2013 INSPIRE Program

FIRST (1st) PLACE: Ambrosia Shapiro – INSPIRE Oakland 2013

”For me, Oakland has been on a long winning streak in the contest for the best place to live in the Bay. The diversity and history of Oakland, not to mention the amazing architecture and huge artist population, inspire me everyday. Oakland is rich with culture: Over 100 dialects and languages are spoken in the city, and it’s the birthplace of the Black Panther movement.

I wanted to create a design that nods to that very important past while at the same time shows the fresh, new, and exciting place Oakland is today. Children’s Fairyland, Art Murmur, gondola rides on Lake Merritt, swimming in Lake Temescal, and farmer’s markets almost everyday of the week are just a few reasons why Oakland is the place to be.”

Oakland Digital's 2013 INSPIRE Program

FIRST (1st) PLACE: Marilia Lobo – INSPIRE Berkeley 2013

”For my billboard art I tried to embrace all the elements that represent Berkeley to me; the bear is the California symbol, and also it’s the UC Berkeley mascot, he is with a megaphone because UC Berkeley was the stage where very important movements such as women rights and free speech took place in the 60’s.

The background’s boldness is to represent the present and retro kind of look for the past. It is colorful, because I have never seen a place that holds so much diversity in a positive way as Berkeley has. Berkeley is a colorful, creative and engaged melting pot; people who live there tend to make the difference in the society.

I’m studying animation (at Berkeley City College), but I graduated in Industrial Design, Visual Programming in Brazil, and I would be sooooo happy to get an internship with ODALC!”

What_Is_Chiro Chiropractic is an overall way of looking at the human body. It’s based on the idea that the body is self-sustaining and self-healing. The body is in essence completely controlled by the brain through its connection via the spinal cord and the vast networks of nerves that make up the body. When this system is not functioning at its peak, the overall performance of the human body is lacking.

“Since her days at Oakland’s Hibiscus, and even further back at Front Porch in San Francisco, chef Sarah Kirnon has infused the Caribbean flavors of her youth into creative dishes exhibiting the heart of soul food with a modern vision. Kirnon’s fried chicken, a recipe she learned from her grandmother while growing up in Barbados, is a bit of a cult classic that follows her around from restaurant to restaurant.

Miss Ollie's presented by Oakland Digital (ODALC) and InspireOakland.com

Once Kirnon left Hibiscus, she put her efforts into opening Miss Ollie’s, which made its debut on Dec. 4. Named after, and in tribute to, her grandmother the restaurant occupies a roomy, corner location of Swan’s Market in Old Oakland. There a friendly crew serves lunch only, Tuesdays-Fridays, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.”

SweetHeart Company, or SweetHeart Cafe, is located at 315 9th Street in Oakland Chinatown.

What are customers saying?

“The boba here just keeps getting better and better !! MM LOVE IT !”

“Easily accessible location that attracts many school people. Love most of their drinks and their tapioca is delicious – soft, chewy, and sweet. I prefer this over Quickly anytime. I usually order either a regular bubble milk tea, taro milk tea, passion fruit green tea, or chrysanthemum, always with tapioca. I also love their selection of small appetizer type foods – the popcorn chicken and fried calamari are my favorite. And their retail snacks are nice too.”

Showers of Flowers is located at 3850 San Pablo Avenue Suite 100 in Emeryville, CA.

What are customers saying?

I’ve used A LOT of floral shops/delivery services, and this is the most positive experience I’ve ever had. The name of the guy who served me is Tony, and he was incredibly helpful. I told him that my girlfriend loves gerbera daisies, and even though he didn’t have them in stock at the time I called in, he went out of his way to get some to include in the arrangement for my girlfriend. He texted me a picture of the arrangement before sending the flowers off to make sure that I was satisfied with them and to ensure that all the details of the message, etc. were correct. The flowers were delivered in a very timely manner, and Tony informed me as soon as the flowers had been received at my girlfriend’s office. Very professional, very nice and friendly service, and the arrangement looked beautiful.”

This shop is a blessing. I’m new to the Emeryville/Oakland area and I needed a florist… The owner took me in and made my wife the most beautiful arrangement I had ever seen. He asked what the flowers were for and I said “my wife’s not feeling so good,” and he responded compassionately with “I hear you, brother” and went straight to work on the worlds greatest basket. He explained every single flower name and let me chose my own vase, got me a card and was very quick and confident in his work. Thanks a lot, showers of flowers I’ll never forget what you’ve done for my wife and I.”
